Why the shampoos sold for thin hair often make it worse

A scalp that squeaks feels like proof the product worked, so most of the category is built around aggressive clarifying surfactants — usually SLS or SLES, and usually the second ingredient on the label.

That same stripping dries the length. Dry fibre is brittle fibre, and brittle fibre snaps when you brush it. Which is how a bottle bought to help ends up adding to what you find in the brush.

Forte is built the other way round: a sulfate-free cleanse that lifts oil and buildup from the scalp and leaves the fibre intact. Less breakage, wash after wash.

American vs Korean — what actually differs

A formulation difference you can read off the back of either bottle, not a slogan.

The drugstore aisle
SLS / SLES surfactants. Big, fast, squeaky lather. Silicone slip that coats the strand and rinses away by day two. Actives bundled into a trademarked complex.
Velora Forte
Sulfate-free disodium laureth sulfosuccinate. Hydrolyzed silk and keratin that sit in the fibre rather than on it. Seven peptides, named individually on the carton.

The comparison is to the sulfate-based shampoos that make up most of the mass-market aisle, not to any specific brand. Read your own label and check the second ingredient.

How to use it
  • Wet thoroughly, lukewarm. Not hot. A properly soaked scalp needs far less shampoo.
  • Lather at the scalp for about a minute. Fingertips, not nails. Let the lengths clean themselves as it rinses down.
  • Rinse, then treatment from mid-length to ends. Keep it off the scalp. Leave a minute, rinse cool.

One to two pumps covers shoulder-length hair. Most people find they were using roughly twice what they needed.

The slip test: after the treatment, run your fingers through it in the shower. If it combs through wet, it is not going to snap on the way to dry.

Full ingredient panel, and who should be careful

The seven peptides: sh-Polypeptide-11, sh-Oligopeptide-1, sh-Oligopeptide-2, sh-Polypeptide-3, sh-Polypeptide-4, sh-Polypeptide-22, sh-Polypeptide-9 — plus hydrolyzed silk and a recombinant silk polypeptide.

Also on the panel: water, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, cocamidopropyl betaine, nettle extract, cocamide MIPA, PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate, heartleaf (Houttuynia cordata), hydrolyzed collagen, hydrolyzed keratin, copper tripeptide-1, panax ginseng root, white mulberry bark, japanese cnidium root, sweet flag root, panthenol, menthol, salicylic acid, tocopheryl acetate, urea, polyquaternium-10, and fragrance.

Worth knowing before you buy. This formula contains menthol (you will feel a brief cool tingle at the scalp), salicylic acid, and fragrance. If your scalp reacts to any of those, this is not the bottle for you — and we would rather tell you here than have you find out in the shower.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and rinse immediately if it happens. Discontinue if irritation occurs. Keep out of reach of children.

What it costs per wash

300 ml is roughly 30 washes at one to two pumps for shoulder-length hair.

  • Shampoo alone — $36.99, about $1.23 a wash
  • Shampoo + treatment — $62.99, about $1.05 per bottle-wash
  • Two duos — $109.99, about $0.92

For comparison, a widely sold hair supplement runs $88 a month, which is $2.93 a day, every day. That is arithmetic, not a claim about which works better.

Two weeks

Same head, same lighting

The manufacturer's own trial photos. We would rather show you these than a percentage we cannot stand behind.

Study photographs of the same parting at day 0 and day 14

Study close-ups of the same scalp area at day 0 and day 14
Same scalp area, day 0 and 14.

What this is: manufacturer photos from a two-week trial of 23 adults. Not placebo-controlled, and a small, short study. Not proof of regrowth, and we claim none. Appearance is affected by styling, lighting and parting. Results vary.

Shampoo lather worked through the mid-lengths of wet hair

Why it happens

A squeaky scalp feels like proof.

So the category leans on harsh clarifying surfactants and calls it a deep clean. Then the hair dries out — and dry hair breaks.

Which is how the bottle bought to help ends up adding to what you find in the brush. Read the reviews under almost any anti-thinning shampoo and the same three words keep surfacing: it dried out.

How it works

Clean the scalp. Keep the fibre.

Cleanse without the strip

Sulfate-free base. Lifts oil and buildup without the squeak that leaves lengths brittle.

Silk and keratin

Hydrolyzed silk, keratin and collagen reinforce the fibre. Stronger fibre, less breakage.

Comfort at the root

Salicylic acid clears buildup. Heartleaf and copper tripeptide leave the scalp calm, not tight.

This is a shampoo. It will not regrow hair.

No shampoo will, and any bottle that says otherwise is selling you something it cannot deliver. This one washes without stripping, strengthens the fibre, and leaves your scalp comfortable. That is the whole claim.

Smooth mid-length hair drawn through the fingers

Hair that combs through wet is hair that is not about to snap on the way to dry.

The routine

Three minutes. Same shower.

Wet thoroughly, lukewarm

A properly soaked scalp needs far less shampoo.

Volume from the first wash

Without silicone weight, hair dries with its own body.

Shine that is the fibre
