Real ribbed knit
Chunky cotton rib with a brushed liner. It behaves like the beanie you already own.

The element runs the full band of the hat, not one pad at the front. The warm part of this beanie is the part that sits against the place the cold actually gets to.
HaloBand 360° element
The heating element runs the entire circumference of the hat rather than sitting in one panel at the front, so the warm part of the beanie is the part touching your ears.
Three published settings
Low 100 to 113°F, medium 113 to 122°F, high 122 to 140°F. One button on the cuff steps through them.
7.4 V, 7000 mAh pack
Up to seven hours of heat per charge, from a pack carrying more than twice the capacity of the 5 V cells most heated hats are built around.
Hidden pocket in the cuff
The battery slides into a sewn pocket inside the fold and the wiring runs in the lining. With the heat off this reads as a plain black beanie.
Hand and machine washable
Lift the battery out of the cuff pocket and the hat goes into the mesh bag it comes with, and into the machine like anything else you own.

School run, dog walk, the last half hour of daylight. Up to seven hours on a charge covers a whole winter day outdoors without touching the charger.

Why a thicker hat does not fix it
Wool and fleece do not make heat. They slow down the heat your body is already sending up to your head, and on a mild day that is plenty. Below freezing it stops being plenty: your body pulls blood back from the edges to protect your core, and your ears are about as far out on the edge as a person gets. That is how you end up in a perfectly good beanie with ears that still ache.

What the cold actually reaches
At 0°F in a 15 mph wind the wind chill is −19°F, and at that wind chill the National Weather Service puts exposed skin at thirty minutes to freezing. The CDC keeps a short list of the parts the cold gets to first, and ears are on it, alongside the nose, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes.
Look at the diagram. A single pad across the forehead heats the one part of your head that was never the problem. The HaloBand element runs the full circumference instead, so the ring of heat closes around both ears, which is where the cold was always going to land.

The three settings
One button, on the cuff, where your thumb already is. Press it once for low, 100 to 113°F, which is the setting for walking. Again for medium, 113 to 122°F. Again for high, 122 to 140°F, for standing still in the wind on a platform. Three real ranges with numbers attached, which is more than most heated hats will tell you.

Hidden cuff pocket
The pack slides into a pocket sewn inside the folded cuff and lies flat against the back of your head, which is where you stop noticing it about a minute after you put the hat on. The cable runs inside the lining. From the outside this is a black ribbed beanie, and that is the whole idea: you can wear it into a shop, a classroom or a meeting without taking it off.

Battery and run time
7000 mAh at 7.4 V is a serious pack for something you wear on your head. The heated beanies at the top of the market run 5 V, and the ones at the bottom rarely publish a figure at all. It charges over USB Type-C from the same brick as your phone, and up to seven hours means you can leave before it is light and still have heat left when the light goes again.

Ribbed cotton, brushed liner
Chunky ribbed cotton on the outside, a brushed fleece liner on the inside, and enough give in the rib to take a 19 to 21 inch head without gripping it. The body stands 9.5 inches, so the cuff folds once and still comes down past the ear line. Take the battery out and it hand washes or goes in the machine in the mesh bag that comes with it.

Heat around the whole band
Crown to cuff, both ears inside it
Will it fit you
Battery out, mesh bag on, into the machine. It washes like a hat because it is one.

First winter my ears have not ached
Outside from six and the first hour used to be the worst of the day. Low setting under the hard hat all shift and I am not thinking about my ears at all now. Battery still had something left at two.

Walks two dogs twice a day
★★★★★
The part over the ears is the part that matters
I had one with the panel at the front and never understood what it was warming. This one is hot right around the band. Medium for the morning loop, and it is the only reason I still go the long way.

High setting on the platform, off on the train
Eight minutes on an open platform in January is its own kind of misery. High while I wait, one press off when I board, back on at the stairs. A charge gets me through the week that way.

Bought it as a gift, kept it
★★★★★
Does not look like a gadget
That was what I worried about. It looks like a plain black ribbed beanie, the battery is hidden in the fold and the only tell is a small button. I bought a second so my dad could keep the first.

Ice fishing most weekends
★★★★★
Seven hours is a real seven hours
Out on the lake from before light. Low most of the day, high when the wind got up, still going when we packed up. The pack is bigger than the one in the heated gloves I own.

Washed it three times already
★★★★★
Takes the battery out and goes in the wash
I did not expect to be able to wash it, which was my whole hesitation with these. Battery out, hat in the little mesh bag, in with the towels. Comes out the same and heats the same.

Big head, usually a problem
★★★★☆
Fits a 22 inch head fine
I am right at the top of what they list and the rib has more give in it than the number suggests. Sits properly over the ears with the cuff folded once. Tip: set it to low before you go inside somewhere, not off, and you will not forget it is on.

Drives a school bus
★★★★★
On before I open the door at five
Pre-trip inspection in the dark with the wind across the lot is the coldest twenty minutes of my day. I press it on in the cab and by the time I walk round the bus it is warm all the way round. Three winters of cold ears, fixed.

Up to, on one charge of the 7.4 V 7000 mAh pack. Out before light, still warm after dark.
The top setting, for standing still in wind. Low and medium sit under it for everything milder.

Three settings, with the ranges published rather than implied: low 100 to 113°F, medium 113 to 122°F, high 122 to 140°F. Low is the one most people live on. High is for standing still in wind.
The whole band. The element runs the full circumference of the hat, crown down through the folded cuff, so the ear line sits inside the heated area. That is the difference between this and the hats with one pad at the front.
No. The element is worked into the band behind the brushed fleece liner, and the cable runs inside the lining to the cuff pocket. What you feel on your head is fleece.
Every day. It is a proper ribbed cotton beanie with a fleece liner before you press anything, so on a mild morning you wear it like any other hat and leave the battery on the charger.
Power
Up to seven hours from the 7.4 V 7000 mAh pack. Low draws least and high draws most, so a day spent mostly on low stretches further than a day spent mostly on high.
USB Type-C, with the cable in the box. The same brick that charges your phone charges this. The battery comes out of the cuff pocket to charge, so the hat is still wearable while it is on the cable.
In a pocket sewn inside the folded cuff, flat against the back of the head. It is out of sight and out of the way, and the hat looks like a plain beanie from any angle.
Yes. One 7.4 V 7000 mAh pack, the Type-C charging cable and a mesh laundry bag all come in the box with the hat. Nothing else to buy.
Living with it
Take the battery out of the cuff pocket first, then hand wash, or put the hat in the mesh bag it comes with and run it through the machine. Reshape it damp and let it air dry.
The rib stretches from 19 to 21 inches, 48 to 55 cm, which is one size across most adult heads, and the body is 9.5 inches so the cuff folds once and still covers the ears. It is unisex.
Only if you point at it. Black ribbed knit, no wires on show, battery hidden in the fold, and one small round button on the cuff that most people read as a logo.
Yes. It is a normal beanie profile with the pack lying flat at the back, so a hood goes over it and a hard hat sits on it the way it would over any knit hat.
