Everything that comes in the box

Thirteen pieces, and this is all of them. Most listings say "13 in 1" and leave you to work it out.

  • 1 carrier truck. T-Rex head cab, clear hinged lid, clear side doors, six storage cells, four sound buttons on top of the head.
  • 8 pull-back dinosaurs. Tyrannosaurus, stegosaurus, triceratops, a long-neck and a spike-back, in two colourways each.
  • 3 die-cast vehicles. A pickup, an off-road jeep and a hovercraft.
  • 1 helicopter.

Thirteen pieces for the price most brands charge for the truck on its own, and all twelve vehicles store inside it.

How the mouth launch works

The whole head flips open. That is the mechanism everything else hangs off, and it is the part children work out in about four seconds.

  1. Drop a vehicle in through the top of the head. It sits at the top of the ramp inside.
  2. It runs down the inside of the throat. You can watch it go through the open jaw.
  3. It comes out of the mouth and keeps going across the floor.

All twelve vehicles load and launch the same way, so the whole set is in play from the first minute, and the truck itself rolls on oversized off-road tyres that take carpet, tile and driveway without complaint.

The lights and the four sound buttons

Four buttons sit on a pod on top of the head, with seven sounds between them: engine start-up, reversing, the T-Rex roar, and a horn with an emergency siren.

The buttons light up as they are pressed and the eye lights up with them. In a dim room that is most of the appeal, and it is the thing reviewers single out when they say the toy arrived working: "the lights all work and the sounds are amazing."

The eight pull-back dinosaurs are spring driven and need no power at all. Only the truck's lights and sounds use batteries.

What age is it for

Ages 3 and up, and it has unusually long legs for a toy at this price.

  • Three and four year olds live on the mouth launch and the sound buttons. It is the first toy of the day and the last one down.
  • Five and six year olds start building the whole scene with it: loading runs, races, rescue missions with the helicopter.
  • Seven and up still come back for the ramp, and it becomes the thing they set up for a younger brother or sister.

One toy that covers a four-year age range is why this ends up being the gift that gets remembered.

Size and build

17 inches long, 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide. Nose to tail it runs the length of a child's whole forearm, which is why the first reaction is almost always to the size of it. This is a centrepiece toy. There is a photo of it next to a four year old's arm further up the page so you can see exactly what is arriving.

Moulded plastic throughout with a deep textured hide on the head, chunky off-road tyres on chrome rims, and three of the vehicles built with real die-cast metal bodies that have the weight to match.

The clear lid and the twin side doors are the parts a child opens forty times a day, so the whole collection stays visible and reachable without anything being tipped out on the floor.

Backed for 30 days from the day it lands, so you can put it straight into a child's hands and see for yourself.

For the dino-obsessed four year old

There is a moment, about two seconds after the paper comes off, where they just stop.

It is the size that does it. Seventeen inches of Tyrannosaurus with a mouth that opens, parked on the carpet at their eye level, looking back at them.

Then they find the first little dinosaur car, and the next hour disappears.

"Purchased this for my 3-year-old grandson who is OBSESSED with dinosaurs, and he fell in love with it."

A small child's hand reaching for the open jaw of the green T-Rex carrier truck on the floor

Counted, not rounded

Everyone says "13 in 1". Nobody tells you what the thirteen are.

So here they are, laid out. One truck, eight dinosaurs that pull back and go, three die-cast vehicles and a helicopter.

All thirteen pieces laid out from above: the carrier truck and twelve small vehicles in three rows of four
1Carrier truck17 x 4 x 6 inches
8Pull-back dinosaursT-Rex, stegosaurus, triceratops, long-neck, spike-back
3Die-cast vehiclesPickup, off-road jeep, hovercraft
1HelicopterSkids, not wheels

Eight spring-loaded dinosaurs that tear across the floor, three solid die-cast vehicles with real metal bodies, and a rescue helicopter. Twelve vehicles, and every single one of them fits inside the truck.

The part they will not stop doing

The whole head flips open, and the cars come out of the mouth.

Not a hatch. Not a flap on the side. The dinosaur swallows the car at the top of its head and fires it back out across the floor.

2It runs down the inside of the throat

3And keeps going when it lands

"I already know my son's favourite part is going to be the fact that you can take the little dino cars, open up the head of the dinosaur, and send them down like a slide."

All twelve vehicles load and launch the same way, so the whole set is in play from the first minute.

Eight of them do this

Pull one back, let go, and it is gone.

Every one of the eight dinosaurs has a spring motor in it. Drag it backwards two inches on the carpet and it will cross the room on its own.

No batteries, no switch, nothing to charge. It is the oldest mechanism in toy cars and it is still the one a four year old will repeat four hundred times.

"Roll wheels back and they take off."

A small green dinosaur pull-back car mid-travel across the floor, the truck small and out of focus far behind it

Four buttons, seven sounds

It starts, it reverses, it honks, and it roars.

The pod on top of the head has four buttons on it. Between them they play seven sounds: the engine turning over, the reversing beep, the T-Rex roar, and a horn with an emergency siren behind it.

The buttons light up as they are pressed and the eye lights up with them, which in a dim room is most of the appeal.

"The lights all work and the sounds are amazing!"

Close view of the grey sound pod with four red buttons, one lit under a child's finger, and the yellow eye glowing

Six cells behind clear doors

Every vehicle has a slot, and the slot is visible from outside.

The side panel lifts, the top lid opens, and the whole cargo bay is clear plastic, so a child can see what is in there without opening anything.

Side view of the truck with the clear door raised, six cells each holding one vehicle

Clear on every side, so the whole collection is on display even when it is packed away. Lid up, doors up, everything within reach.

And then, at the end of the day

All twelve of them go back inside the dinosaur.

Six cells, a clear lid and two doors that swing up, so putting it away is part of the game rather than the end of it. They load it themselves.

Come March, every piece it arrived with is still together, and the truck is on the shelf looking like the centrepiece it is.

"The fact that they store in the hauler is ideal."

Twelve small vehicles scattered across the floor on the left, and the loaded closed truck on the right with clear floor around it

Bigger than they are expecting

A full seventeen inches of Tyrannosaurus.

This is a proper centrepiece toy, not a pocket one. Nose to tail it runs the length of a child's whole forearm, and it has the presence on the carpet to match.

The truck in side view on the floor with a small child's forearm laid alongside it, running almost exactly its length
Length17 inches nose to tail, wrist to elbow on a four year old.
HeightA full 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide.
Ages3 and up, and it grows with them right through to seven.
Pieces13 in total. One truck, eight dinosaurs, four vehicles.
PowerThe eight dinosaurs are spring-driven, so they are ready the second the box opens.
StorageSix cells behind clear doors. Every vehicle has its own slot.

A toy this size usually costs a great deal more than this one does.

Two interests, one toy

It works for the dinosaur kid and the car kid at the same time.

Which sounds like a marketing line until you watch two of them play with it. One is loading dinosaurs. One is loading the jeep. They are both using the same ramp.

And it is not a boys' toy, whatever the category's own advertising keeps implying. The reviews are full of sisters and cousins who took it over.

"2 year old cousin loves it too. 4 year old sister even played with it. Excellent choice."

Two different children's hands entering from opposite sides, one holding a dinosaur car and one a jeep, over the open cargo deck
